UCT QuEChERS Sorbents Cited in Mycotoxin Analysis Article

Oats (Avena sativa) are a type of cereal belonging to the Poaceae grass family of plants. Although traditionally used for animal feed, the beneficial nutritional and physiological effects of oat products have generated an increased demand for oats in human nutrition. However, oats can be contaminated by pathogenic fungi in the field or during storage.

In a recent paper published in Journal of Chromatography B (Lorenzo De Colli et al.,((2020) 1150 122187), UCT’s Anhydrous Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO4) and Sodium Chloride (NaCl) were employed in the QuEChERS extraction of over 40 mycotoxins in oat samples.

Accuracy ranged between 78% and 158%, while precision ranged from 1.7% to 49.9% under within-laboratory reproducibility conditions. Beside the high degree of accuracy and sample throughput provided, the method can be applied to many compounds currently not regulated, thus generating knowledge for risk assessment purposes.
